Smiths Road Bridge

Project background

Smiths Road bridge crosses the Gudgenby River approximately three kilometres south ofTharwa. The original bridge was a low level, single lane, three span bridge, supported by reinforced concrete blade piersand abutments.

As a result of heavy rains in December 2010 debris built up on the southern side of the bridge and subsequentlywashed away one pier and two adjacent spans.

Scope of works

SMEC Australia Pty Ltd was engaged to design and manage the project and Hawkins Civil were contracted to complete the scope of works.

The total cost of construction was estimated at $2 million. The new bridge was completed in November 2014 and the removal of the temporary Bailey bridge was done in December 2014.
