Molonglo Reach Cycle Path

Project background

During the floods of December 2010 a section of the cycle pathat Molonglo Reach was damaged. Roads ACT commissioned AECOM to investigate thefailure and recommend repair options. Several options were explored. The preferred option was to re‑use the redundantBelconnen Pedestrian Bridge (the old Red Bridge), previously linking Lathlain Street and Westfield Belconnen, to span the section ofdamaged cycle path. This option of using two spans of the Belconnen bridge wasthen developed into Preliminary Sketch Plans (PSP).

A number of studies and inputs contributed to the PSP including:

  • a geotechnical investigation which included boreholes and dynamic cone penetrometer testing
  • weld testing of the bridge to ensure it is structurally sound and fit for re-use
  • design of the piers and abutments for the bridge based upon the results of the geotechnical investigation and structural analysis
  • a risk management workshop to explore the risks and possible mitigation measures of constructing and using the cycle path improvements.

Scope of works

The section of the Molonglo Reach Cycle Path that was damaged bythe floods has been replaced with the old Belconnen 'Red Bridge' and is nowcomplete and open to pedestrian/cyclist traffic.
