Barton Highway/Gundaroo Drive/William Slim Drive intersection signalisation

Project background

The Barton Highway/ Gundaroo Drive/ William Slim Drive intersection was identified for an upgrade to improve safety and reduce queuing at the intersection during peak periods.

Scope of works

The Barton Highway/Gundaroo Drive/William Slim Drive intersection was upgraded to improve safety and traffic flow, notably to balance and improve flows in the morning and evening peak traffic periods.

The upgrade included signalisation of the intersection and an additional lane on all four of its approaches and through the intersection. The traffic signals have been coordinated to control traffic flows through the intersection and to balance flows of approaching traffic according to the time of day.

The signalisation of the intersection, maintaining the roundabout geometry was the best value option for the medium term to resolve the safety issues and improve traffic efficiency. This type of intersection has been delivered at several locations across the country and in New Zealand and Great Britain very successfully.

The intersection improvements also provided on-road improvements for cyclists passing through the intersection on three approaches to the intersection; cyclists approaching the intersection on Barton Highway from the west will utilise a new shared path bridge, parallel to the existing road bridge.

The improvements also included a bus priority lane through the roundabout in the east/west direction linking the Gungahlin and Belconnen town centres.

More information is available in a fact sheet of the Barton Highway/Gundaroo Drive/William Slim Drive roundabout upgrade.

New lane configuration and traffic signals on all four approaches to the roundabout will be included in the upgrade. New bus priority lanes and on road cycle lanes will be provided on the approaches from Gundaroo Drive and William Slim Drive as well as an on road cycle lane on Barton Highway south. The upgrade will also include construction of a new shared path bridge which includes new connections to the existing path than runs alongside Ginninderra Creek adjacent to Giralang.
