Works will begin in early July 2019 make the Canberra city centre more attractive, safer and easier to move around, with improvements to the extended City Interchange along Alinga Street and permanent changes to the traffic arrangements on Alinga Street.
Improvement works will involve the installation of two new bus shelters for platforms 1 and 2 on Alinga Street west of Northbourne Avenue as well as new bike rails. This will improve the amenity of the area while also providing protection from the elements.
These works follow on from the Alinga Street bus station expansion completed in early 2019. This involved repair work to the road surface on Alinga Street, and as well as removing and repositioning some street furniture such as bins and seats.
The works will complement the recently completed upgrades to the road verge on Northbourne Avenue and the Alinga Street light rail stop. Expanding the city interchange across to Alinga Street west will ensure better integration with the Alinga Street light rail stop for customers interchanging to bus services.
As part of these work, Alinga Street will be made bus only between Northbourne Avenue and Moore Street/West Row. This will improve access to public transport for residents while also improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, buses and motorists on Northbourne Avenue.
Under these new traffic arrangements vehicles leaving Ogders Lane will still be allowed to turn left onto Alinga Street.
Signage will be erected to advise motorists and pedestrians of the changed traffic arrangement during and after these works. Works are expected to be completed over the next few weeks.
Transport Canberra bus services will be affected during this time. Visit the Transport Canberra website for further information.
Construction works will begin from early July and run for several weeks.
