Work has begun to improve recreational access and amenity at Emu Inlet on the fore shore of Lake Ginninderra.
The upgrade will be the first stage in realising a much needed high quality urban recreational space for the rapidly growing Belconnen Town Centre.
The shoreline of Emu Inlet will be dramatically reshaped to improve recreational access to and around the lake.
There will be complex works in the water, including construction of a new lake wall and considerable stormwater work that involves extending five large existing stormwater pipes to direct stormwater away from the shoreline and well into the lake.
The new and generous grassy bank behind the lake wall will be constructed and transition gently to the water from street level at Emu Bank and from the Belconnen Arts Centre as well as other surrounding areas.
The grass will be watered by an irrigation system using lake water.
Casuarina Park will be reworked to improve accessibility and useability of the space for a variety of recreational pursuits, small functions as well as larger community events such as the Belconnen Community Festival. The space will be suitable for informal recreational use, relaxing and will be in easy reach for lunchtime use by workers in the Belconnen Town Centre.
To make way for this high quality parkland, steps and retaining walls; the old and unused light poles, and trees in the area to be reshaped will be removed.
44 new trees will be planted to shade the new paved pedestrian link from the Belconnen Arts Centre and Beissel Street.
Lights along the pedestrian pathway will also be installed.
The new shape of the inlet will help water circulation thereby reducing smells and opportunities for water borne litter to accumulate.
The combined works will significantly improve recreational opportunities, public safety, security and amenity; the water quality and usability of Belconnen Lakeshore and Emu Inlet and create links to other recreation and functional areas in the Belconnen Town Centre.
The Emu Inlet upgrade is the third part of a program that continues the ACT Government’s initiative to improve opportunities for public recreation on the lakeshore close to the Belconnen Town Centre.
