The objective of the ACT Road Safety Improvement Program is to reduce the severity and frequency of crashes which occur on the road network where road conditions are considered to be a contributing factor.
Roads ACT uses a ranking system to assess the need for, and priority of, improvements at intersections and mid-blocks. This system takes into account all fatal and injury crashes as well as property damage only crash types which have a more than a 5% casualty rate. The system then weights the severity of all crashes of these particular crash types to determine an overall ranking.
The top 300 intersections and 150 mid-block locations ranked on this basis are continuously monitored over two and seven year periods. This ensures that trends over time, as well as any recent increasing trends, are identified.
This ranking system is updated every year, and the top ranked intersections and mid-blocks form the basis for projects which are considered for improvement under this program. The table below outlines the current top 10 intersections and mid-blocks in the seven-year ranking system:

The Federal Government also sponsors a road safety program - the Black Spot Program. A different crash criterion is used to identify projects for funding under the Black Spot Program.
