Recycling and Waste Facilities

To help ACT residents reduce, reuse and recycle their waste, there are a variety of different facilities now in operation to assist in the reduction of waste to landfill. Some of the facilities provide free recycling and others may incur a fee.

Recycling Drop-off Centres

Five Recycling Drop-off Centres allow residents to dispose of any item they would otherwise dispose of through their residential recycling collection:

There is no cost and these centres are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Polystyrene must not be left in boxes.

CCTV cameras operate 24 hours a day. Fines apply for illegal dumping.

Recycling drop-off facilities are also available at the Mugga Lane, Mitchell and West Belconnen Resource Management Centres.

Green Waste Recycling Facilities

Green Waste facilities allow residents to dispose of organic garden waste such as prunings, leaves and grass clippings.

Two facilities provide services on behalf of the Territory at no cost to domestic customers. These facilities are operated by independent contractors:

Each contractor applies restrictions on what will be accepted. Contact the contractor directly for disposal guidelines and opening hours.

Resource Management Centres

Three Resource Management Centres allow residents to dispose of most other kinds of waste.

These centres provide free access to:

  • recycling drop-off
  • reuse facilities
  • green waste recycling
  • recycling for oils, gas bottles, fire extinguishers and fluorescent lighting

These centres also accept household hazardous waste and as an option of last resort, transfer stations for waste to landfill (fees apply).
