Smart bins

Innovative solar compactor rubbish bins, called Big Belly solar bins, have been trialled in:

  • medium to low use areas, in Campbell and Molonglo
  • a high use area at the Kingston Foreshore.

The trial investigated the capacity of these bins compared to the regular 240 litre bins used in our public places.

Trial results

The trial was successful in identifying advantages of sensor technology, particularly in low to medium use areas where there is potential for energy savings from efficient organised waste collection. In areas of high use, a traditional bin system provides a better whole of life cost.

These results support the ACT Government's commitment to improve Canberra's liveability and create a clean environment and a carbon-neutral waste sector.
