Container Deposit Scheme

The ACT Container Deposit Scheme: Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement (CDS RIS) sets out the expected impacts of putting in place the proposed permanent exemptions. Consultation is open until Friday 9 February 2018.

A Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is coming to the ACT in 2018.

Under the CDS, you will be able to return your empty beverage containers to an approved collection point to receive a 10 cent refund. Most aluminium, glass, PET, HDPE, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150 millilitres and 3 litres (inclusive) will be eligible containers under the scheme.

Agreed arrangements

Some elements of the ACT Scheme have already been decided such as:

  • the 10 cent refund amount for the return of empty eligible containers
  • refund marking consistent with other CDS legislated jurisdictions
  • eligibility of containers is consistent with existing schemes in South Australia and the Northern Territory, NSW and the emerging scheme in Queensland.

For more information on the CDS, including payments and types of eligible containers please read the Discussion Paper and fact sheets available on the documents page or view the frequently asked questions.
