Watering of Public Spaces

Please note: The following policy on the watering of parks and public open spaces in Canberra excludes sportsgrounds.

The ACT Government only irrigates grass and trees in high use public areas including town parks, district parks and high use shopping centres, such as the City Centre.

Non-potable water is used to irrigate public parks adjacent to lakes and ponds, where accessible and under licence by the Environment Protection Authority. Non-potable water is also used to water young trees and shrubs using water trucks to cart the water.

In August 2014, an upgrade of irrigation infrastructure in parks across Canberra was completed to improve water management and the quality of the grassed areas in high use locations.
